This book is the story of the transformation of the life of eleven-year-old December. December has spent most of her life moving between foster homes with her few personal possessions. Her most valued of these are a bird book her mother left behind and her own journal entitled Bird Girl. December believes she is a bird and that one day when she finds the perfect tree her wings will sprout from the scar on her back and she will be able to fly. When she is placed in a new foster home with Eleanor, a taxidermist and volunteer at a wildlife refuge, she begins to believe that she might have found a real home. Things are not all smooth sailing when she first arrives, but they begin to fall into place once December learns to trust and build relationships with her new foster mom and friend at school, Cheryllynn. Dealing with the same group of school bullies for very different reasons—Cherryllynn because of her recent transformation from Charlie and December because of her newness and being friends with Cheryllynn—brings the friends together, with Cheryllynn helping December discover the strength that she needs draw upon her own transformation. Throughout the book, December slowly comes to terms with her past and begins to understand that she can write a new story going forward. With an endearing and diverse cast of characters, this is a unique debut novel with an inspiring message of hope, determination, and fortitude.
