An environmental warning is brought to life in this wordless story of a whale entangled in an underwater trap. A fisherman and his preadolescent son are made aware of the huge creature's plight when they bring in a catch of fish. Darkly hued artwork in gouache and watercolors depict the terrible helplessness of the whale's position. The young boy begs his father to assist the whale. After initially claiming that they do not have time to help, the father relents and heads toward the trapped creature. Their meeting is emotionally illustrated by a close-up of the man and whale reflected in one another's eyes, a visual affirmation of their shared experience as living beings surviving in the world. The father is able to set the whale free and the grateful animal expresses his joy with a spectacular display of gratitude. Without using a single word, the author beautifully illustrates a rescue story that will resonate with readers who are becoming more aware of the problems humans have created through their environmental carelessness. An informative Author's Note includes a strong warning about never attempting an animal rescue yourself, but always contacting professional wildlife authorities if you see an animal in distress. The note also includes statistics from the World Wildlife Fund that reflect the tremendous losses of whales, dolphins, and porpoises due to human actions that harm the environment. The author stresses that we can and should change our behavior and find ways to establish care and concern for all living creatures on the earth. For more information and research a website on whale entanglement is also provided.
