If I would ask you about using primary sources in your classroom, you might think of an old photo, a handwritten letter or a diary entry, but what if instead of that photo, I gave you hundreds of photos strung together in a film bringing that still moment to life? And what if instead of that handwritten letter, you could hear that person's voice speaking from the past? Let's talk about audio-visual primary sources and why they are engaging and compelling resources that you should be using in your classroom. And just as important. Let's talk about strategies you can consider to assure that meaningful learning is taking place with them.

Tom Bober is a school librarian, 2018 Library Journal Mover and Shaker, former Teacher in Residence at the Library of Congress, and author of the books Elementary Educator's Guide to Primary Sources: Strategies for Teaching and Building News Literacy: Lessons for Teaching Critical Thinking Skills in Elementary and Middle Schools. He is a Digital Public Library of America Community Rep, a member of the Teachers Advisory Board for the National Portrait Gallery, and a co-chair of the Education Advisory Committee of the American Archive of Public Broadcasting.
