Harland's book focuses on how to shift your library space into a learning commons and includes explanations around how to incorporate design considerations into the changes. Case studies help to provide real-world representations of the concepts.

Nair, Prakash. Blueprint for Tomorrow: Redesigning Schools for Student-Centered Learning. Harvard Education Press, 2014.

Nair is co-founder of the international, award winning architectural firm Fielding Nair International focusing on new educational design. His book introduces new ways to think about learning spaces and new space concepts. It is well illustrated to provide visual examples.

Nair, Prakash, Randall Fielding, and Jeffery Lackney. The Language of School Design: Design Patterns for 21st Century Schools. Designshare, Inc., 2009.

This jointly authored book explores 20 different learning modalities and describes how space can support each of them. It is extremely well illustrated. It also links learning styles to space concepts.

Sullivan, Margaret. High Impact School Library Spaces. Libraries Unlimited, 2015.

Sullivan's book focuses on school library spaces, an area she both writes and consults on for schools. It illustrates how concepts, technology, and pedagogy can be used to envision new learning environments. There is a chapter on sensory elements with examples and a final chapter on how to merchandise your new library design.

Sullivan, Margaret. Library Spaces for 21st-Century Learners, A Planning Guide for Creating New School Library Concepts. American Association of School Librarians, 2013.

Sullivan's first book walks school librarians through the process of gathering information to plan a new library environment. The tools include needs assessment information, focus group questions, and two examples of taking information and design concepts to 3D illustrations.

Stathopoulos, Panagiotis. "Involving Students in the Library Redesign Process." School Library Monthly, March 2013. http://schoollibraryconnection.com/Home/Display/1967438.

Stathopoulous, a librarian in Kentucky, explains how he connected his library redesign with classroom curriculum in order to authentically involve students in the process. He clearly delineates his process and shares the questions he posed students during their exploration.

Taylor, Anne. Linking Architecture and Education: Sustainable Design of Learning Environments. University of New Mexico Press, 2009.

Dr. Taylor is the Regents Professor in the School of Architecture and Planning at the University of New Mexico. She is the founder and director of the Institute for Environmental Education as well. Her textbook is highly illustrated with examples and case studies. It also diagrams information like architectural features and educational philosophy and outdoor learning zones and educational concepts.
