Activity: Draft a Selection Policy

Context:

This lesson focuses on the importance of having a board-approved selection policy in your school district. The lesson covers what should be included in a selection policy and suggests the ALA Workbook for Selection Policy Writing as a tool to develop a policy when one does not exist. Self-censorship is also covered in this lesson, along with suggestions for avoiding self-censorship in selection decisions.

Instructions:

Locate your school or school district's selection policy. Use the ALA workbook to evaluate your policy and determine areas that need improvement. If there is not policy, use the workbook to draft a policy.

While you are working, consider self-censorship. When have you made selection decisions based on your personal beliefs, fears, or biases?
