This amazing book will appeal to teachers, students, and librarians. Six chapters are chockful of 18 astonishing and interesting insect facts. While some of these might appear to be super heroes in a comic book, this is a book of nonfiction. Readers will learn about insects that are Fast and Fierce, Great Imposters, Big and Tough, Masters of Chemical Weaponry, Engineers and Architects, and Amazing Ants. For each insect on the list, the reader will learn its common name, alias, "Super Scientific" name, super power, secret hideout, size, trademark features, favorite foods, allies, and archenemies. Jillian Nickell's illustrations are bold, large, colorful, extremely descriptive, and wonderfully eye-catching. Together Messner and Nickell have created text and pictures with exquisite details. An author's note poses the question of whether super insects could take over the world someday. While all the insects are fascinating, I suspect the favorite among young readers will be Machine Gun Butt: a beetle with the ability to spray a hot noxious mist from its abdomen. This title can be enjoyed in its entirety or kept close by to quickly check specific insect facts. Any educator who wants to excite their students about nature and insects will love this book. Science teachers and school librarians will definitely want to add this title to their collection. Additional Resources.
