Certification Requirements

Teacher Licensure Needed: No, but candidates will need a bachelor's degree

Master's Degree Needed: No

Praxis II Library Media Content Test Needed: Yes: a passing score of 143 or above. This is considered an Educational Specialist area for licensure..

Other Testing Needed: Yes, the Praxis II (Principles of Learning & Teaching)

Description: Maine offers a provisional or professional-level Educational Specialist certificate with a subject area endorsement.

Library/Media Specialist is considered a shortage (targeted need) area, so the requirements for certification have been lowered to allow for more teachers to be hired.

Evaluation Process for Licensure:

Certificate Eligibility Pathway 1:

  • Graduated from a Maine program approved for school library science, together with a formal recommendation from the preparing institution;
  • Earned a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • Completed an approved course for "Teaching Exceptional Students in the Regular Classroom"; and
  • Passed Library Media Specialist PRAXIS II Test Code 0310 Score 143.

Certificate Eligibility Pathway 2:

  • Earned a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • Completed a minimum of 36 semester hours of graduate study in library science coursework;
  • Completed an approved course for "Teaching Exceptional Students in the Regular Classroom";
  • Passed Library Media Specialist PRAXIS II Test Code 0310 Score 143; and
  • Passed Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) Test Code 0522 score 160 or (PLT) Test Code 0524 Score 157. This test may be waived upon documentation of completion of a state-approved library/media specialist program.

Certificate Eligibility Pathway 3:

  • Earned a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • Holds a valid Maine provisional or professional teaching certificate;
  • Completed a minimum of 36 semester hours of graduate study in library science coursework;
  • Completed an approved course for "Teaching Exceptional Students in the Regular Classroom"; and
  • Passed Library Media Specialist PRAXIS II Test Code 0310 Score 143

Eligibility for a conditional certificate shall be established by one of two pathways:

Conditional Pathway 1:

  • Earned a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, in accordance with Chapter 115 Part I Section 4.4; and
  • Completed a minimum of 36 semester hours of graduate study in library science coursework.

Conditional Pathway 2:

  • Earned a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, in accordance with Chapter 115 Part I Section 4.4;
  • Holds a valid Maine provisional or professional teaching certificate; and
  • Completed a minimum of six semester hours of graduate study in library science coursework.

Reciprocity: Maine follows the Interstate Agreement with the 49 states and the District of Columbia in the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education & Certification (NASDEC).
