Certification Requirements

Teacher Licensure Needed: Yes

Master's Degree Needed: No

Praxis II Library Media Content Test Needed: Yes, score of 152.

Other Testing Needed: Yes, Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching.

Description: An individual who serves as school library media specialist has an official endorsement and considered a School Service Specialist

Evaluation Process for Licensure:

Criteria for eligible individuals:

  • K-12 library media education endorsement program requires 18 semester hours in library media coursework
  • Verified teaching experience in K-12 library media within the five-year period immediately preceding application may be accepted in lieu of field experiences at the equivalency of one year's teaching experience for one semester hour credit for a maximum of three semester hours of the total credit hours required
  • A K-12 Library media endorsement can be added to any teaching certificate.

Reciprocity: Yes, but all educators new to South Dakota must complete the initial certification requirements. In addition, all educators new to South Dakota must complete an approved three-credit South Dakota Indian Studies course and a three-credit Human Relations course.
