Criteria for eligible individuals:
- Completion of an approved program for a media coordinator at the Master's degree level or above
- Completion of an approved program after July 1, 1984, allows a provisional license upon employment (18 hours in library media) with requirements to update to Master's degree level
- Possess a Masters Degree in Library Science from an American Library Association Program
- Complete the courses leading to certification as a school library media specialist including a practicum. If the candidate is employed, the practicum can be waived

Reciprocity: North Carolina follows the Interstate Agreement with the 41 states and the District of Columbia in the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education & Certification (NASDEC).
