News Messengers and the Sharing of News

Webinar
News Messengers and the Sharing of News

School library innovator Tom Bober and senior vice president of education for the News Literacy Project Peter Adams examine best practices for sharing news, teaching students to assess the credibility of news messengers, and working with current events in an educational setting. This dynamic conversation brings into focus ideas on evaluating not only news sources, but also the intermediaries that bring us information and the ways these delivery systems prime our judgment. The presenters look at the topic of news literacy at the elementary age and explore how to build on these literacies to engage students in upper grade levels.

  • The spectrum of "news messengers"
  • The pitfalls of being a news consumer (media diet, engaging with "bad messengers")
  • How to evaluate various news messengers—word-of-mouth/person-to-person sharing, individuals on social media, news outlets, and news aggregators (and how to differentiate between these)
  • How to react and interact with news messengers
