It's always exciting to talk with education innovators and learn about the new tools, techniques, and teaching strategies they create to help students not only learn academic subjects, but build important life skills. Shannon Miller is one such innovator; she's a district teacher librarian, and the Innovation Director of Instructional Technology and Library Media at Van Meter Community School in Van Meter, Iowa. In our conversation, Miller explains the inspiration behind one of her most successful teaching tools: choice boards. Choice boards offer students an array of independent learning opportunities (ideal for both remote and in-classroom settings) that not only help inspire curiosity, but cultivate agency, as students take increasing ownership of their learning path.
