Core Values in School Librarianship: Responding with Commitment and Courage edited by Judi Moreillon

Book Study Resources

Core Values in School Librarianship: Responding with Commitment and Courage offers readers the opportunity to learn how colleagues in the field have taken action for equity, diversity, inclusion, and intellectual freedom (EDII). In all cases, their work has involved relationships with other school stakeholders, including administrators, and advocacy. The final chapter in the book "Collaboration" (see the Selected Reading in this book study) highlights the essential pathway for school librarians to reach their capacity to spread library core values throughout their learning communities.

The contributors to this book serve their schools and the profession in a variety of roles. They work at various instructional levels and at the district and university levels as well. Their teaching contexts are urban, suburban, and rural in states across the U.S. Each chapter is co-authored by two or more writers and includes two vignettes that further describe the value or practice in action. With added quotes from colleagues, scholars, and researchers, this book amplifies diverse voices. All readers will find their library context and connections to their work in this book.

Readers are invited to consider the questions and engage in the activities as individuals, pairs, or in small collegial groups. When discussing and working with colleagues, participants can engage in the activity individually and then share or compare. Some of the activities may best be conducted by partners or in collaborative teams.

By reflecting on their own experience and the experiences of others while engaging in the study kit, preservice and practicing, novice and veteran librarians can ignite and renew their passion for the core values of school librarianship. They can find inspiration and motivation to act courageously to ensure that all library stakeholders benefit from their commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and intellectual freedom. Core Values readers can use the ideas and testimonials in this book and the book study to take their next steps to achieve a values-centered approach to improving, and even transforming, teaching and learning in their libraries, buildings, and districts.
